Dundrum Co.Tipperary

Dundrum in Co.Tipperary, on the main Dublin to Cork line, was opened in 1846 by the Great Southern & Western Railway. The station lost its passenger service in 1976, one of several small stations to do so on the Cork main line at the time. The station however remained as a block post, retaining its signal cabin and sidings. With the extension of CTC to Limerick Jct in 1986, the signal cabin closed and the station was much rationalised, which involved the demolition of the platforms and fencing off of the track. The station buildings however remain and they are a fine example of typical GSWR architecture, and appear to retain their original gable boards and porch canopy. The station building has since been renovated and restored, but the up buildings, such as the goods shed and waiting room, remain derelict.
This is the former station at Dundrum on the Great Southern & Western's Dublin to Cork main line. The station opened with the line July 1848, and closed to passengers in August 1976. 201 Class locomotive No.212 passes the overgrown goods loading bank at the south end of Dundrum Station as it heads a northbound express to Dublin formed of Mk3 coaching stock. Like some mid 19th century Great Southern & Western Railway stations, Dundrum features a miniature bell tower, located at the southern end of the structure. This door on the railway side of Dundrum Station still retains its wooden stencils, for the one time parcel office. This is the former stone built goods shed at Dundrum, located on the up side of the station. Until the 1987 this shed was still served by a siding, however the signal cabin closed the following year and all track and signals were removed.

Despite having closed to passengers in 1976, the wooden CIE name board is still mounted onto the side of Dundrum station building. The station was still the scene of activity until it ceased to be a signalling block post in 1987. South of Dundrum village on the R497 road is the unremarkable level crossing at Grange. It was here in 1962 that the first automatic level crossing was installed on an Irish railway. The half barriers seen here, which had been the type used since 1962, have been replaced by full barriers that span the width of the road.
